It was once thought that man would never travel faster than sound, that there was simply a sound barrier that would never be broken. The reason was because if a plane began to approach the speed of sound, it began to fall apart. It began to vibrate and break apart because of the G-forces, the stress. However, it was later discovered that if the plane cold actually break through the barrier, all the stress pretty much disappeared. We used to hear the Sound barrier being broken in the 1950s.
